Buying a car in Thailand: Comparison between new and used cars
Worked in Chiang Mai for two years, where public transportation is lacking. When I first arrived in Thailand, I urgently needed a means of transportation. To buy a new car, proof of income for the past 6 months is required, so I chose to purchase an 8-year-old used Honda HR-V 1.8L. I plan to buy a new car later to alternate use. Below is my actual experience for your reference. Used Cars Advantages: Low price, about 40% of a new car Disadvantages: 1. Frequent repairs or parts replacement 2. Higher loan interest rates than new cars Advantages: 1. Original factory maintenance and repair support is complete 2. Saves vehicle inspection procedures: cars under 7 years old do not require inspection, can directly pay compulsory insurance and taxes 3. Electric vehicle market is rising: government offers incentives Disadvantages: High price compared to the cost of living in Thailand Regarding used cars, there are two purchasing channels. Due to price considerations, I bought directly from the owner and, worried about not being able to assess the car condition details, hired a professional technician from a driving school to accompany me. Below is my experience: Used Car Dealers (Example in Chiang Mai, mostly gathered northeast of the old city) Advantages: 1. Dealers handle the complicated transfer documents and procedures 2. Provide a warranty for a certain period Disadvantages: Prices are about 20% higher than private sales (compared with one2car company) Private Sales (e.g., FB groups) Advantages: Cheaper prices, dedicated groups for specific car models, more choices Disadvantages: 1. Must go to the seller's location to pick up the car, some areas are very remote 2. Cannot fully understand the car's condition 3. Must personally handle the transfer procedures at the vehicle registration office where the license plate is registered
